The Gale Encyclopedia of Medicine

  9780787654894
The Gale Encyclopedia of Medicine 2 (GEM2) is a one-stop source for medical information on nearly 1,700 common medical disorders, conditions, tests, and treatments, including high-profile diseases such as AIDS, Alzheimer’s disease, cancer, and heart attack. This encyclopedia avoids medical jargon and uses language that laypersons can understand, while still providing thorough coverage of each topic. The Gale Encyclopedia of Medicine 2 fills a gap between basic consumer health resources, such as single-volume family medical guides, and highly technical professional materials.

Gr 9 Up-Although much of the information included in this set is quite technical, most of it will be of interest to students for personal or academic use. Covering topics from "Abdominal ultrasound" to "Yoga," the articles are clearly written and well organized, and present concepts in an easily understood style. Where appropriate, entries include a definition, description, causes, symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, prognosis, and prevention. Source notes, black-and-white photos and illustrations, and boxes that contain definitions for terms used in the text are also included. The "see" references make the encyclopedia useful for readers who might not know correct medical terminology. Even the more sophisticated topics, like specific blood tests and diagnostic procedures, are explained in layman's terms without being oversimplified. A helpful resource for studying the human body or current developments in medical technology.-Christine A. Moesch, Buffalo & Erie County Public Library, NY

The contributing writers of this strong general medicine resource are doctors, nurses, and other healthcare workers who translate medical disorders, conditions, tests, and treatments into almost 1500 easy-to-read articles of one to ten pages. In addition to a short glossary, each article includes a list of additional resources, among them books, articles, tapes, URLs, and contact information for associations. These features and the general reading level make this work very useful as a starting point for a lay reader's medical research; it has twice the number of articles and illustrations as the other leading medical encyclopedia, Magill's Medical Guide (Salem, rev. ed. 1998). At twice the price, The Gale Encyclopedia is still the better work. Highly recommended for high school, public, and general reference collections.?Eric D. Albright, Duke Medical Ctr. Lib., Durham, NC
