There is a funny paradox in design. We often think that what we are trying to overcome are bad ideas and bad design. But actually, I don’t see that as the real problem. After all, those ideas and designs should be easy to address by a competent designer. No, in my opinion, the real “enemy” is just the opposite: not bad design and ideas, but great design and ideas. Bad ideas and design are generally relatively easy to displace. However, great ideas of the past get serious traction…and deservedly so. They then get entrenched, and with that, their establishment carries with it a huge inertia—an inertia that continues well past the “due date” of the original idea.
